– Some members of the House of Representatives say Nigerians have the right to know the health status of their president
– Lawmakers express concerns about the manner the information around the president is being managed
Some members of the House of Representatives have called on the government to make public the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Vanguard, a cross section of the federal lawmakers said Nigerians have the right to know the health status of their president.
“There’s need for the government to give us a blow by blow account of Mr President’s condition truly and not Lai Mohammed’s type of accounts, the chairman, committee on public accounts, Kingsley Chinda,” said.
Chinda explained that it was the right of Nigerians to be entitled to know the state of their president’s health at all times because he’s “fed with our money, he’s sustained with our money, we pay his medical bills, he belongs to us, he’s our property and we have a right to know his state at all times”.
On his part, Daniel Reyenieju, PDP, representing Warri fed constituency said there was nothing wrong with being sick because it’s a natural phenomenon about life.
The lawmaker however expressed concerns about the manner the information around the president was being managed.
“But what I’m worried about is the manner the information around Mr President was managed because Nigerians are so eager to know the state of his health. And we are all aware of the fact that this is not the first time a Nigerian president is falling ill in office,” he said.
Commenting on the issue, the House chairman, committee on public petitions, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, called on Nigerians to go on their knees to pray for the president to recover and take back his mantle of leadership in piloting the affairs of the nation.
The secrecy and the conflicting information surrounding Buhari’s health is fueling speculation about the true state of his health.
The speculation heightened after President Buhari asked for extended medical leave in the UK and handed over affairs of the state to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
