Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday

1. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has lambasted the president Buhari- led administration for failing Nigerians despite the promise of change. Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday, the ex-president who has been backing the policies of the current administration noted that it is easier to win an election than to right the wrongs of the past. He said the government was dwelling in the past instead of moving ahead to bring in the change it promised.

2. Following agitation by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Federal Government on Wednesday said while it had met seven out of the eight demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the current recession would allow it to meet the union’s demand for earned allowance worth N284bn. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, said this while answering questions from State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

3. The Court of Appeal, Wednesday reinstated the PDP factional governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede who was earlier replaced by Jimoh Ibrahim. The court ruled that INEC erred in recognizing Jimoh Ibrahim, saying Jegede was the candidate that should contest the November 26 governorship election.

4. Relatively, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has accepted the judgment, saying Jimoh Ibrahim’s name will be replaced with Eyitayo Jegede’s as the authentic candidate of the party, provided it gets a notice from the court early enough.

5. Nigeria Senate on Tuesday reacted to the executive communication on the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper, saying Buhari was not honest to Nigerians in his presentation as it was not realistic. It however, mandated its committee to look into the presentation.

6. Nigeria Super Falcons were held to a 1-1 draw in their second group fixture on Wednesday, at the ongoing African Women’s Cup of Nations in Limbe, Cameroon. Both countries now have four points each, but Nigeria leads the group on goal difference.

7. Factional Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the Saturday’s Ondo election, Jimoh Ibrahim, has said he was heading to the supreme court to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal that replaced his name with Jegede. Ibrahim insisted that the outgoing governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, would not succeed in planting Jegede as his successor.

8. Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose has described a Federal High Court, Abuja judge, Okon Abang, as a disgrace to the judiciary, calling on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to save judiciary from the disgrace by sacking Okon whom he said was working for some cabals that are protecting him.

9. Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has denied media reports that $175m was missing from her bank accounts. She said her account balance as of the time it was frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was less than $10m. She advised the media to be fair to her and stop reporting falsehood. She made this clarification in a statement signed by her spokesman, Mr. Sam Dokubo, on Wednesday.

10. The Federal Government has agreed to ban unqualified and unregistered teachers from classrooms nationwide. This was disclosed by the Registrar/Chief Executive of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye. He also said the government will not consider teachers without registration certificates and TRCN licence for its 500,000 teachers’ recruitment scheme.
